::well, I meant to write it down...
So the other day (November 14th), I made lactation cookies for my sister. Her baby was born 7 weeks early (shoutout to Noa Janelle Louise Halliburton...you can see many pictures of her on my InstaLove sidebar. She's a doll, I know) on November 8th.
Anyway...the sister struggled with her milk supply at first due to Noa's early arrival - her milk simply hadn't received the message to "come down". So to help, I did what came naturally.
I made food. Duh.
I went straight to Google...to find a base recipe for what would become gluten-free lactation cookies. I used a recipe for a base, and adjusted to what I had on hand, being a bit heavy-handed with the milk-producing ingredients (ground flax seed, whole rolled oats). I subbed out the bananas with pumpkin, because really, who doesn't like pumpkin?
I made them.
I tasted them.
Yum.
I posted about them on Facebook.
I gave them to my sister.
She ate them.
She loved them.
And I'm happy to report that her milk has indeed come in. I'm not saying the cookies did it...but I'm sure they played a part. At least that's what I will continue to tell myself... ;)
But guess what. I'm an idiot. Because I lost the recipe I "tweaked". I'm sure you have some questions/comments that may look something like this:
"Erica, look in your internet history!"
That would be too easy. Not there.
--------------------------------------
"Check your recipe box, you dope!"
I did...it's not there.
--------------------------------------
"Why didn't you make a mental note of it?!"
Because that would require thinking.
The bottom line is, a bunch of people commented or wrote to me asking for this recipe. And I can't give it to you. Unbelievable.
BUT!
Here are some great recipes that really, really remind me of the one I used...it's the best I can do, ladies (and gents...if you're a gent...)
1) Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Lactation Cookies, from Little People & Me. It seems like a more traditional sweet, buttery chocolate chip cookie. Like the kind of cookies you could eat 7 at a time. Be careful.
2) Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Lactation Cookies from Superfresh Babypants. This recipe is a more natural approach to lactation cookies - similar to the one I made. Instead of using the banana, you can sub in pumpkin puree...just saying...it worked in the (missing) recipe I used for mine!
Play around with it. Have fun. Brewer's yeast, flaxseed, and oatmeal seem to be the big milk-producers from my research.
Your baby will thank you.
And hey - you should be thanking whoever (or is it whomever?!) invented the lactation cookie.
Cookies...to benefit the baby...what a sacrifice. :)
Keep the milk flowing. <3
